Why the DS3678-HD
The DS3678-HD is the cordless high-density version of Zebra's DS3600 ultra-rugged family. It reads the same tiny codes as the corded DS3608-HD and adds a battery and Bluetooth.
Zebra's typical ranges: a 3 mil Code 128 from 5.1 cm to 7.6 cm, a 10 mil Data Matrix from 2.5 cm to 22.9 cm and a 20 mil Code 128 up to 66.0 cm. It uses a 1,280 × 960 sensor and a 655 nm laser aimer. For labels read from a metre or more away, the SR or XR fits better.
The 3,100 mAh PowerPrecision+ battery is rated for more than 100,000 scans on one charge, and it reports its health and charge level. A full charge takes up to 3 hours on external power or up to 10 hours on USB power.
The STB3678 cradle charges the scanner and links it to the host. The FLB3678 cradle is sealed to IP65, and Zebra says its industrial charging contacts withstand 250,000 insertions. A forklift mounting plate is available for the FLB3678.
Class 1 Bluetooth 4.0 LE gives a minimum 100 m line-of-sight range to the cradle. Virtual Tether alerts the user when the scanner is left behind or goes out of range, which helps on large shop floors.
Sealed to IP65 and IP68, tested for multiple 3.0 m drops to concrete at room temperature and 2.4 m drops from -20 °C to 50 °C, and 7,500 tumbles at 1.0 m. It weighs 411 g with the battery.

Mount the STB3678 or FLB3678 cradle in an air-conditioned or shaded spot, not on an open dock or near a reflow oven. Zebra's reference guide says the DS3678-HD battery charges at 0 °C to 40 °C, ideally 5 °C to 35 °C; the scanner itself is rated to work up to 50 °C.
For freezers run colder than -20 °C, choose the corded DS3608-HD (-30 °C) and keep any cradle outside the cold room. The cordless DS3678-HD is rated down to -20 °C, and its battery charges only from 0 °C.
The cordless DS3678-HD reads the small codes on pharmacy and hospital-store labels, and its battery lets staff walk a ward store or pharmacy within Bluetooth range of the cradle. It decodes QR Code, Data Matrix, PDF417 and UPC/EAN. Zebra's typical ranges are 5.1 cm to 15.2 cm for a 5 mil PDF417 and 2.5 cm to 22.9 cm for a 10 mil Data Matrix.
For India, Zebra's DS36X8 reference guide lists DS3678-HD2F003VZK as the 'India & Korea' cordless HD. The keypad-and-display HD (DS3678-HD2F003VKWW) carries no India marking. Where the host cannot power the cradle, use Zebra's PWR-BGA12V50W0WW supply: it accepts 100-240 V AC, which covers India's 230 V mains.

If staff roam and your smallest code is below 5 mil, choose the HD: Zebra lists a 3 mil Code 128 from 5.1 cm to 7.6 cm, and the SR sheet starts at 5 mil. If they also scan larger labels from further away, choose the DS3678-SR: a 40 mil Code 128 reads up to 152.4 cm, against 66.0 cm for a 20 mil code on the HD. The battery, Bluetooth range and cradles are the same.
Zebra gives a minimum range of 100 m (300 ft) in direct line of sight for Class 1 Bluetooth, and 10 m (30 ft) for Class 2. Walls, racks and machines shorten it. Virtual Tether warns the user if the scanner is carried out of range or left behind.
