Drivers and firmware come straight from each brand's download centre, so you always get the latest, signed version for your model and operating system.

Set it up yourself

Set up a barcode scanner

Most scanner problems are settings, not faults. These steps use the setting names in the makers' own guides; each guide has the barcodes you scan to change them.

  1. Plug it in and test in Notepad

Zebra's DS2208 and Newland's HR2000 guides list USB keyboard mode as the default, so no driver is needed. Open Notepad and scan a barcode. If the code appears, the scanner works; any remaining problem is a setting in your software.

  2. Wrong characters? Set the keyboard country

Scanners start with a US English keyboard. If symbols such as @ or quotation marks come out wrong, scan the country code that matches your computer's keyboard: 'USB Country Keyboard Types' (Zebra, Newland) or 'Keyboard Country' (Honeywell).

  3. Add Enter or Tab after each scan

Billing and ERP software often expect Enter after a code, sometimes Tab. Zebra: 'Add Enter Key' or 'Tab Key'. Honeywell: 'Add CR Suffix', 'Add Tab Suffix' or 'Remove Suffix'. Newland adds Enter (CR) by default. Ask your software provider which one it needs.

  4. Software needs a COM port?

Some older software reads scans from a COM port. Switch the scanner to its USB COM (CDC or USB serial) mode and install the maker's driver: Zebra's CDC driver from the scanner's support page, Newland's UFCOM driver, or Honeywell's USB serial driver.

  5. Set up many scanners the same way

Use the maker's setup tool to save one set of settings and load it on every unit: 123Scan (Zebra), EZConfig for Scanning (Honeywell), EasySet or NSet (Newland). On Newland scanners, setting barcodes are scanned between 'Enter Setup' and 'Exit Setup'.

  6. Start again from factory settings

If settings are lost or mixed up, scan 'Set Factory Defaults' (Zebra), 'Standard Product Defaults' (Honeywell) or 'Restore All Factory Defaults' (Newland), then set the keyboard country and the Enter or Tab suffix again.

Set it up yourself

Set up a label printer

Blank labels, skipped labels and ribbon errors are usually a setup step, not a broken printer. Work through these in order after installing the printer or changing the roll.

  1. Install the driver for your exact model

Download the Windows driver from the maker's page for your model (table below) and print a test page. Zebra, TSC and Godex also offer a setup tool: Zebra Setup Utilities, TSC Console and GoUtility.

  2. Set the print method: with or without ribbon

Direct thermal prints on heat-sensitive labels with no ribbon; thermal transfer uses a ribbon. A printer set to thermal transfer with no ribbon loaded shows a ribbon error. On a Zebra ZD621: Print > Print Quality > Print Type, or the printer's web page under Media Setup > Print Method.

  3. Check which labels you have

Scratch the label face with a fingernail. A dark mark means a direct thermal label. Thermal transfer labels printed without a ribbon come out blank.

  4. Load the ribbon the right way round

The ink side of the ribbon must face the label, or the labels print blank. To find the ink side, press the sticky side of a label onto the ribbon and peel it off: if ink comes away on the label, that is the ink side. Use a ribbon at least as wide as the label.

  5. Calibrate after every new type of roll

Calibration teaches the printer where each label starts. Zebra ZD421/ZD621: with the status light green, hold PAUSE and CANCEL for 2 seconds. Godex G500: hold FEED while switching on, and release when the READY light flashes red and STATUS turns orange. TSC MB241: use Sensor Calibration in the power-on utility or the Sensor menu.

  6. Set the same label size everywhere

Enter the label width and height of the roll in the printer driver (Printing preferences) and in the software you print from. A size mismatch makes a label print across two labels or stop halfway.

  7. Clean the printhead with each new roll

Zebra's ZD421/ZD621 guide says to clean the printhead each time you load a new roll; its ZT411 guide names 99.7% isopropyl alcohol.

Source: Zebra ZD421/ZD621 cleaning steps (opens in a new tab)

  8. Printing from Excel or a database

ZebraDesigner 3 Essentials is free for typed text, dates and counters; Professional (a paid licence per PC) adds Excel and database printing. TSC printers come with BarTender UltraLite, and Godex offers GoLabel II. If your ERP prints labels itself, you may need none of these.

Drivers and manuals by model

Each link opens the maker's own support page for that model, so you always get the current driver for your version of Windows. Some makers ask you to sign in before you download; Honeywell keeps its drivers and EZConfig on a sign-in portal. If you cannot reach a file, ask us.
