Covered by the manufacturer's warranty. The warranty period, terms and conditions are as declared by Newland.
The FR80 is a Newland on-counter scanner for supermarkets, convenience stores and tobacco and alcohol counters. The cashier passes goods across a large window instead of picking up a scanner.
Large window for goods of all sizes
Newland describes a large scan window to suit goods of different sizes, and the scanner reads in sense mode, starting a read when a code comes into view. A 13 mil EAN-13 reads from 0 to 140 mm in front of the window.
Keeps up with fast swipes
Newland gives a motion tolerance of 350 cm/s, so items can be moved across the window without stopping. A code left in the window is not read again until it is taken away and shown again.
Wrinkled, shiny and curved codes
A 1280 × 1088 sensor with red LED illumination and Newland's UIMG and AIBD decoding is meant for wrinkled, reflective and curved barcodes. It reads 1D codes down to 3 mil, and codes with as little as 15% symbol contrast.
Add a handheld for heavy items
A second RJ45 port connects a handheld scanner over RS-232, powered from the FR80. Bulky goods can then be scanned with the handheld while both feed one cable to the POS. This needs a 5 V power adapter; ask for it in the quotation.
Status at a glance
Six kinds of status indication show decoding, configuration, communication and fault states. Keys on the front set the beep sound and volume to suit a noisy or quiet store.
USB or RS-232 to the POS
The main RJ45 port connects to the POS by USB (keyboard, virtual COM or HID-POS) or RS-232. Without the adapter, the scanner can run from USB power, but then the handheld port is not available.

For buyers in India
Using the FR80 in India
These are the points buyers in India ask us about the FR80. Mention the ones that apply to you when you request a quote.
Cashiers sweep 890 packets past without stopping
With the FR80, cashiers can sweep packets past without stopping: Newland rates its motion tolerance at up to 350 cm/s. It reads a standard-size (13 mil) EAN-13 from 0 to 140 mm in front of its window. Packaged goods made in India usually carry GS1 India EAN-13 codes starting with 890.
Scan rice sacks with a handheld on port two
Add an RS-232 handheld scanner to the FR80's second RJ45 port and the cashier can scan a sack or carton where it sits; the port powers the handheld. Heavy staples such as rice, atta and oil tins are hard to lift past a counter window. Name the handheld you plan to add when you ask for a quote, because Newland sets a data format it must send.
Plan a mains socket at each lane
Plan a mains socket at each FR80 lane, because the handheld port works only with the 5 V adapter. Newland gives the FR80 a peak current of up to 800 mA, more than the 500 mA a USB 2.0 port supplies. Its 5 V, 1.5 A adapter covers that with room to spare.
Shade it at hot counters: rated to 50 °C
At a counter near an open shutter or in afternoon sun, keep the FR80 shaded and ventilated. It is rated to work from -20 °C to 50 °C, lower than the 60 °C of the FR4080 and FR27.
Reads medicine label codes and phone screens
The FR80 reads QR Code and Data Matrix as well as 1D codes, on paper and on phone screens, including the codes on medicine labels. It reads the text in a UPI QR like any QR code, but payment happens in the customer's UPI app, not in the scanner.

FR80 or FR4080: which suits our checkout?
The FR80 is a larger on-counter scanner (151 mm wide, 542-549 g without base) with a 350 cm/s motion tolerance and a port for a handheld scanner, made for lanes that sweep goods past the window. The FR4080 is a smaller desktop scanner (290 g) that reads a 13 mil EAN-13 further out, to 280 mm against 140 mm, and suits smaller counters.
Can we connect a handheld scanner to the FR80?
Yes. The secondary RJ45 port takes an RS-232 handheld scanner and powers it at 5 V, so staff can scan heavy items without lifting them. Newland requires 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit and a code-type prefix on each scan. The FR80 must be on its power adapter for this port to work.
Does the FR80 need a power adapter?
Newland rates the FR80's power adapter at 5 V, 1.5 A. The scanner can also run from the PC's USB port without it, but then the handheld port cannot be used, and Newland gives a peak current of up to 800 mA, more than a USB 2.0 port's 500 mA. We suggest using the adapter at every busy lane.
Will the FR80 work with our POS software?
Usually, yes. Over USB it can act as a keyboard, so scans appear wherever the cursor is, or as a virtual COM port or HID-POS device. RS-232 suits older POS machines. Scans from a handheld on the second port arrive through the same cable, so the POS sees one scanner.
Does the FR80 read codes on mobile phones?
Yes. Newland states the FR80 reads printed barcodes and on-screen barcodes, so customers can show e-coupons, loyalty or order codes on their phones. It reads QR Code, Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec.
Can Allmark install the FR80 and connect it to our software?
Yes. We install the FR80 at your site, set it to send data the way your ERP, warehouse or billing software expects (our own warehouse management system included) and train your team. Tell us the software when you ask for a quote, and we include the setup in the quotation.
