Why the FR42-BT
The FR42-BT is Newland's cordless desktop scanner, listed on Newland's India and Asia site. It stands on the counter and reads 1D and 2D codes on paper and phone screens without anyone holding it, runs on a replaceable 2,000 mAh battery and sends each scan to the PC over Bluetooth 5.0, usually through a small USB dongle. Newland also sells a corded version, the FR42, in the same 82 × 77 × 146 mm housing; it connects over USB and has a 640 × 480 sensor and an infrared trigger.
The FR42-BT talks to the PC over Bluetooth 5.0. Newland gives a range of 50 m in open space with a clear line of sight. The counter stays clear, and there is no data cable to wear out, pull loose or replace.
Staff present an item or a phone to the window and the scanner reads it. The default mode is Sense mode, which starts reading when the view changes. Newland also shaped it to be gripped on both sides, so staff can pick it up for an item that is awkward to bring to the window.
Newland's 1080 × 1280 sensor reads 1D and 2D codes, including codes on phone screens. It reads a 13 mil EAN-13 from 10 to 130 mm and a 15 mil QR code from 15 to 110 mm. Its 62° × 54° view tolerates items moving at up to 1.8 m/s.
The 2,000 mAh lithium-ion battery lasts 9.5 hours at one scan every 3 seconds, or 16 hours at one scan every 10 seconds. It takes 5 hours to charge. Newland lists the battery, BTY42, with its own USB Type-C port, so a charged spare can keep the counter running.
Through the dongle it works as a USB keyboard (the default), a virtual COM port or a HID-POS device. Without the dongle it pairs directly with a Bluetooth host as a keyboard (HID) or connects over Bluetooth Low Energy to an app built with Newland's Bluetooth SDK.
IP52 sealing against dust and dripping water, 1.5 m drops, and an operating range of -10 °C to 55 °C. Newland's EasySet tool sets prefixes, suffixes and data formats, and Newland lists JPOS and OPOS drivers for POS software.

Keep the PC with the dongle near the counter, because a busy shop shortens the FR42-BT's Bluetooth range. Newland's 50 m range is measured in open space with no obstacles and no strong interference from other 2.4 GHz equipment, with the PC and scanner more than 50 cm from large metal surfaces. Steel racks, walls, people and 2.4 GHz equipment shorten it.
The FR42-BT reads standard-size EAN-13 codes, with 13 mil bars, from 10 to 130 mm in front of the window. GS1 India issues the EAN-13 numbers that start with 890. Customers can also show loyalty, coupon and order codes on their phones. A UPI payment QR can be read as text, but the payment happens in the customer's UPI app.
