Newland FR27 compact desktop barcode scanner with its scan window facing up

Why the FR27

A small scanner for codes shown on phones

The FR27 is a compact Newland desktop scanner. It sits flat with the window facing up, and the customer holds a phone or a printed code over it.

Made for screen codes

Newland designed the FR27 for codes on screens, including phones with a protective film, as well as printed 1D and 2D codes. It reads in sense mode or continuous mode, with no trigger.

Fits where space is short

It measures 66.3 × 76.3 mm and stands 38 mm high, and weighs 120 g. That suits a narrow desk, a store shelf or a customer point where there is no room for a tower scanner.

Wide view, quick reads

A 68° × 51° field of view (84.8° diagonal) and 2.7 m/s motion tolerance mean the customer does not have to line the code up exactly over the window.

One USB cable, no adapter

The FR27 has a fixed USB cable about 1.5 m long and is powered by the PC or terminal, drawing 140 mA (typical) when reading and 100 mA when idle at 5 V.

Can be screwed down

The base has two M3 threaded holes, 4.5 mm deep, so the scanner can be fixed to a counter, shelf or kiosk panel.

Copes with worn labels

Newland's UIMG decoding is meant for soiled or wrinkled labels. It reads codes down to 5 mil, codes with as little as 20% symbol contrast, and works in up to 100,000 lux of daylight.

Used in

  • Retail and kirana billing counters
  • Pharmacies and medical stores
  • Cinema, event and ticket counters
  • Canteens, cafes and food courts
  • Self-service kiosks and customer points
  • Libraries and visitor desks

For buyers in India

Using the FR27 in India

These are the points buyers in India ask us about the FR27. Mention the ones that apply to you when you request a quote.

Reads phone codes held just over the window

Customers can rest a phone just over the FR27's window: it reads a 15 mil QR code from 0 to 85 mm above the window. At Indian counters customers show e-tickets, e-coupons, loyalty and order codes on their phones.

Hold a GST e-invoice QR about 8 cm up

To read a GST e-invoice QR with the FR27, hold the invoice about 8 cm above the window rather than flat on it, so the whole code fits in the scanner's 51° vertical view. Newland gives a 0-85 mm range for a 15 mil QR code.

Runs from the PC's USB port, no adapter

The FR27 needs no power adapter, so there is no plug type to worry about; it runs from the billing PC, a thin client or a kiosk computer. It draws 140 mA (typical) while reading and 100 mA idle at 5 V, about 28% and 20% of the 500 mA a USB 2.0 port supplies.

Keep it clear of spills; rated to 60 °C

Keep the FR27 clear of spills and wipe the window with a soft cloth. It is sealed to IP42: protected against objects larger than 1 mm and against dripping water, but not dust-protected like an IP5x scanner. Newland rates it to work from -20 °C to 60 °C.

Exploring for a different use?

If your job differs from what the FR27 is built for, these Newland models may fit it better:

  • Buyers who need RS-232, or a longer reading range for products as well as phones, often look at the Newland FR4080 (USB and RS-232, 10-280 mm for EAN-13).
  • Buyers who run a busy supermarket lane often look at the Newland FR80 (on-counter scanner with a large scan window).
  • Buyers who want no data cable between the scanner and the PC often look at the Newland FR42-BT (Bluetooth 5.0 with a USB dongle).

FR27 FAQ

What is the price of the Newland FR27 in India?

The FR27 price depends on the quantity. Ask our team for today's competitive price: share your requirement and budget, and we will help you choose the right configuration and send a written quotation with current pricing and delivery time.

We have an FR21. Is the FR27 the replacement?

Yes. Newland's discontinued-products list shows the FR21 ended on 29 March 2021 with the FR27 named as its replacement. The FR27 connects by USB only. If your FR21 uses a serial (RS-232) connection, the FR4080 offers USB and RS-232.

Is the FR27 good for scanning products at a billing counter?

It is made mainly for codes shown on phones and small printed codes held over the window. Newland rates it to read a 13 mil EAN-13 from 20 to 105 mm, against 10 to 280 mm for the FR4080. For a counter that scans a lot of packets and cartons, the FR4080 or the on-counter FR80 is the better fit.

Does the FR27 take UPI payments?

No. The FR27 is a barcode scanner, not a payment terminal. In UPI, the customer's app scans the shop's QR code and the payment happens in that app. The FR27 can read the text in a UPI QR, as it reads any QR code, for example to check a printed code, and send that text to your software.

Will the FR27 work with our billing or kiosk software?

Usually, yes. The FR27 connects by USB only. In keyboard mode, scans appear wherever the cursor is; it can also act as a virtual COM port or HID-POS device, and Newland lists JPOS and OPOS drivers and the EasySet setup tool. A billing machine with only a serial port needs the FR4080 or FR80 instead.

Can the FR27 be fixed in a kiosk or counter?

Yes. The base has two M3 threaded holes, 4.5 mm deep, so it can be screwed to a panel or shelf. It is 38 mm high with a fixed USB cable about 1.5 m long, so place it within that distance of the PC.

Can Allmark install the FR27 and connect it to our software?

Yes. We install the FR27 at your site, set it to send data the way your ERP, warehouse or billing software expects (our own warehouse management system included) and train your team. Tell us the software when you ask for a quote, and we include the setup in the quotation.
