How to choose

Six questions that decide the printer

Not sure desktop is right? Our barcode printer buying guide compares desktop, industrial and mobile printers and lists the checks to make before you order.

Direct thermal or thermal transfer?

Direct thermal prints on heat-sensitive labels without a ribbon; it suits shipping and short-life labels. Thermal transfer uses a ribbon and prints longer-lasting labels for products, assets and harsher handling. The table shows which method each model offers.

How wide is the label?

Most shipping and product labels need a 4-inch printer (about 104-108 mm print width). For small labels such as shelf or small product labels, the Zebra ZD411 and ZD611 are 2-inch models (up to 56 mm) with a smaller footprint.

How small is the text or barcode?

203 dpi suits shipping and most product labels. 300 dpi prints small text, small 2D codes and small labels more cleanly; most models in the table offer a 300 dpi version.

How many labels a day?

Desktop printers suit counters, offices and dispatch desks. If you print all day on a production or dispatch line with large rolls, compare our industrial printers.

How will it connect?

USB is common to all; Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth depend on the model and version, as each product page shows. Tell us your billing, ERP or labelling software and we will set the printer up with it.
