Why the ZD220
The ZD220 is the 4 ips, USB-only model of Zebra's ZD200 Series; the ZD230 is the faster model with network options. Zebra builds the ZD220 as a direct thermal or a thermal transfer printer, and Zebra Asia Pacific lists it as replacing the GC420d and GC420t.
The direct thermal ZD220 needs no ribbon. The thermal transfer ZD220t takes 74 m ribbons, 33.8 to 109.2 mm wide on a 12.7 mm core, for labels that must last longer.
It accepts ZPL II, EPL2 and XML, and EPL1 line mode on the direct thermal model, so formats from older Zebra desktops such as the GC420 usually need no rework. Zebra's spec sheet calls its software Print DNA, and lists on-printer apps that run languages associated with other printer brands. Test one label first.
Zebra's OpenACCESS clamshell opens for media changes, a feed slot takes fan-fold labels, and one status light and one feed/pause button cover daily use.
Zebra builds the ZD220 with a dual-wall frame for durability, and lists it as ENERGY STAR qualified.
Zebra lists die-cut and continuous labels, tag stock and continuous receipt paper, 25.4 to 112 mm wide, on rolls up to 127 mm across or fan-folded.
Tear-off is standard; Zebra offers a factory-installed peeler for label-by-label dispensing, so decide on it before you order.

The ZD220 prints up to 104 mm wide on media up to 112 mm, so a 4 × 6 inch (101.6 × 152.4 mm) courier label fits. At 102 mm/s (4 ips) one such label takes about 1.5 s. Choose the direct thermal model for courier dispatch, so the desk stocks only labels.
The ZD220 prints at 8 dots per mm, with EAN-13 and QR Code on the same label. For retail packs, ask us to set up the MRP, net-quantity and price lines in your label format and print test labels on your roll.
Zebra rates the ZD220 to run from 4.4 °C to 41 °C at 10-90% humidity, non-condensing. Keep it out of direct sun and hot, unventilated stockrooms.
Zebra rates its power input at 100-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz, auto-detected. Plug it into a UPS or stabiliser where the mains supply is unsteady.

Both are 4-inch, 203 dpi Zebra ZD200 Series printers with 128 MB Flash. The ZD220 prints at up to 102 mm/s (4 ips) over USB only and takes 74 m ribbons. The ZD230 prints at up to 152 mm/s (6 ips), takes 300 m or 74 m ribbons, and Zebra builds it with Ethernet, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi as factory options. Choose the ZD230 if several people share the printer or it must sit on the network.
Yes. Zebra no longer sells the GC420 (last sale 30 April 2020, support ended 30 June 2023, Asia Pacific dates) and names the ZD200 Series as its successor; its Asia Pacific ZD220 page says the ZD220 replaces the GC420d and GC420t. For the GT800 (last sale 31 January 2020, support ended 31 March 2023), Zebra lists the ZD220, ZD421 or ZD621. The ZD220 connects over USB only, so tell us if your old printer used its serial or parallel port.
No. Zebra lists USB 2.0 as the ZD220's only interface. For a network printer choose the ZD230, which Zebra builds with Ethernet, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi with Bluetooth, or the ZD421, where Zebra offers network options.
Only 74 m ribbons: 34 mm outside diameter on a 12.7 mm core, 33.8 to 109.2 mm wide, used 1:1 with the media. If you print long runs and want fewer ribbon changes, the ZD230t also takes 300 m ribbons. Tell us your label width and we quote the matching ribbon.
Usually. The ZD220 runs ZPL II, EPL2 and XML, and the direct thermal model also runs EPL1 line mode, so formats from older Zebra desktops such as the GC420 normally print unchanged. Tell us which software prints your labels, and print one test label before a rollout.
