The short answer

Which handheld, in five lines

  • Keying numbers all day, or running old terminal-emulation apps: a keypad model. New Android apps and web screens: a touch model.
  • Buy Android: Microsoft has ended support for Windows CE, Windows Embedded Compact, Windows Embedded Handheld and Windows Mobile (Embedded Handheld 6.5 in January 2020, Compact 2013 in October 2023), and the current Zebra, Honeywell and Newland handhelds we supply run Android.
  • Check the security-update end date for the exact model and Android version, not just the brand. Support counts from the model's launch, not from the day you buy it.
  • Using a SIM: confirm the Indian 4G bands and test calls on your own Jio or Airtel SIM before a bulk order.
  • More than one shift: a hot-swap battery, or spare batteries with a multi-slot charger.
  • Plan how scans reach your app, and run a short pilot on your real screens before buying for the whole site.

Question 1: how do staff enter data?

Touch or keypad

Both scan the same codes. The difference is how people type and which apps they run.

Question Touch Keypad
Typing On-screen keyboard, which can be customised (Zebra TC22). Physical keys in numeric, function or full alphanumeric layouts (Zebra).
Apps New Android apps and web pages. Also runs older terminal-emulation (TE) apps unchanged (Zebra).
Screen Larger: 5.5 to 6.5 inches on the models below. Smaller screen beside the keys, for example 24 keys with a 4-inch screen on the Newland MT67.
Best for Picking, delivery, retail and field apps with taps and photos. Counting and receiving with heavy number entry.

If your staff mostly scan and tap, choose touch. If they key in quantities and codes all day, try a keypad model with your own app before deciding.

Question 2: how long will it stay secure?

Android version and security updates

A handheld that no longer gets security updates is a risk on your network. Each maker states its own terms; these are from their documents, read in October 2026.

Maker What the maker states What to ask before buying
Zebra LifeGuard: at least 24 months of updates from the launch of products on an Android version; the previous version stays supported for 12 months after a new one; included under the initial software warranty or a OneCare plan. Final Android version for the TC22/TC27: Android 16. Which Android version it ships with, and whether a service plan is included.
Google (rugged devices) Rugged devices in Google's Android Enterprise Recommended programme get security patches within 90 days, for 5 years from the device's first ship date. When the model was first launched.
Newland MT93 on Android 15: security patches until 29 February 2028. MT93 units still on Android 13: patches ended in Q4 2025. MT95 on Android 15 (Newland's roadmap calls it Kambur Pro III): until Q4 2029. For other Newland models on Android 13, such as the MT93-U and WD1, ask for the date. Which Android version is installed on the units you receive.
Honeywell CT32: ships with Android 14, upgradable to Android 16 and 18 subject to technical feasibility. EDA52: Android 11, upgradable to 13 pending confirmation. The upgrade plan in writing.

Support counts from the model's launch or the Android version's release, not from your purchase date. A model launched years ago has less support left, even when bought new.

Question 3: will it work on your site?

Network, battery and toughness

Check the mobile network, the battery and the drop and sealing ratings against your own site before you buy.

Question What to check Examples
Indian 4G bands B1, B3, B5, B8, B40 and B41 on the version you buy. Listed for the Zebra TC27, Honeywell CT32 and EDA52, and Newland MT93 and MT95 (Android 15). The Zebra TC22 is Wi-Fi only. Zebra notes band support may vary by country or carrier.
Voice calls on 4G (VoLTE) Whether the maker states VoLTE, and a test call on your own SIM. Zebra lists VoLTE for the TC27. Other sheets we read do not state it.
Battery for the shift Capacity, and whether the battery can be swapped without switching off. Newland MT95 and MT67: hot swap. Zebra TC53/TC58: warm swap on standard models, hot swap on premium. Zebra TC21/TC26: power off first.
Drops The drop height without the rubber boot, not only with it. Zebra TC21/TC26: 1.2 m bare, 1.5 m with boot. Newland MT93: 1.5 m, 1.8 m with boot.
Wi-Fi in a warehouse Fast roaming between access points, and a Wi-Fi survey of your site. Zebra and Honeywell list fast roaming (802.11r, OKC).

Buy one or two units first, test them on your network, your SIM and your app, then order for the whole site.

Examples are from the makers' own spec sheets.

Before you order

Six checks before you order handhelds

These come from the makers' support documents and forums, where these questions come up after rollout.

Write down the Android version and update end date

Ask for the Android version installed and the maker's security-update end date for that model and version, as in the table above. Get it in the quotation.

Test your SIM

Check the Indian 4G bands on the version you buy, and make a test call on your own Jio or Airtel SIM before a bulk order. Makers state VoLTE per model and carriers can differ.

Plan how scans reach your app

Each maker has a scanning service that types the code into the screen or sends it straight to the app. On Zebra devices, for example, scanning can work in the demo app but not in yours until a DataWedge profile is set up for your app. Web ERPs may need the maker's enterprise browser, which Zebra licenses for 1, 3 or 5 years. Run a pilot on your real screens.

Batteries for every shift

Prefer batteries that report their health: Zebra flags its PowerPrecision+ batteries for replacement at about 80% health. Add spare batteries and a multi-slot charger for multi-shift work.

Survey the Wi-Fi

Handhelds can hold on to a distant access point and drop scans in dead zones. A Wi-Fi check of the racks and docks before rollout avoids most of this.

Plan device management for more than a few units

Set up all devices the same way with the maker's staging tool or a device management (MDM) service. The Newland MT95, for example, is certified with SOTI, 42Gears and Ndevor. Some features carry licences: Wi-Fi 6E on the Zebra TC22/TC27 needs a paid Mobility DNA Enterprise licence.

Questions buyers ask

Mobile computer buying FAQ

Why is a handheld terminal costlier than a phone?

It is sealed against dust and water, rated for drops onto concrete, has a scan engine that reads labels at a distance, takes swappable batteries and gets security updates on a stated schedule. Compare those figures on the model pages before choosing a phone for all-day scanning.

How many years of Android updates will it get?

It depends on the maker, the model and the Android version installed. Zebra states a minimum of 24 months per Android version, under the initial software warranty or a OneCare plan; Google's programme for rugged devices requires 5 years of patches from the model's first ship date; Newland publishes an end date per model and version. See the table above and ask for the date in the quotation.

Can we still buy Windows CE or Windows Mobile handhelds?

Not as a sensible new purchase. Microsoft has ended support for Windows CE, Windows Embedded Compact, Windows Embedded Handheld and Windows Mobile, so they get no security updates, and the current Zebra, Honeywell and Newland handhelds we supply run Android. If your app still runs on Windows handhelds, we help you plan the move to Android.

Will a Jio or Airtel SIM work in it?

Check that the version you buy lists the Indian 4G bands (B1, B3, B5, B8, B40, B41), then test data and calls on your own SIM. Makers state voice over 4G (VoLTE) per model, so a test call before a bulk order is the safe step.

Can we change the battery without switching off?

Only on hot-swap models, such as the Newland MT95 and MT67 and Zebra's premium TC53/TC58. Zebra's standard TC53/TC58 use warm swap, and the TC21/TC26 must be powered off first. For two or three shifts, choose hot swap or keep charged spares.

Will it work with Tally or our ERP?

Handhelds run Android apps and web screens; whether your ERP has a handheld app or a web screen decides the setup. Tell us your software. Allmark connects handhelds to ERP and warehouse software and sets up the scanning on site. Our own warehouse management system runs on handhelds, and we have supplied it with them.

Is the Zebra TC26 still a good buy?

Zebra stopped selling the TC26 on 28 February 2025 and supports it until 31 March 2028, and names the TC22, TC27 or HC25 as replacements. Check the maker's end-of-sale and update dates before buying any model offered at a low price.
