Barcode labels

Labels made for where they will be stuck

The right label depends on the surface, what the label has to survive and how long it must stay readable. Allmark supplies chromo and other paper labels, polyester and other synthetics, polyimide, UL-recognised and asset labels, and the direct thermal, void, tamper-proof, pre-printed, tag and RFID labels described on this page. Tell us the label size, your printer and where the label goes, and we will quote the right roll.

Which label for which job

Start from where the label goes

Where the label goes decides its material, adhesive and roll. Each use below names the label we suggest for it.

Courier, shipping and other short-life labels

Direct thermal paper labels, printed without a ribbon. Zebra notes they darken with heat and sunlight, so they suit labels needed for months rather than years.

Consider: Direct thermal labels, Desktop label printers, Mobile printers

Product, MRP, carton and retail labels

Paper labels printed thermal transfer with a wax or wax/resin ribbon; Zebra pairs wax/resin ribbon with top-coated paper for labels that get handled or face moderate chemicals.

Consider: Chromo labels, Wax and wax/resin ribbons

Chemicals, heat, moisture and outdoor use

Synthetic labels (polypropylene, polyester, polyimide) printed with a resin ribbon resist abrasion, moisture and chemicals.

Consider: Synthetic labels, Resin ribbons

Circuit boards and high-heat electronics

Polyimide labels printed with a resin ribbon. Zebra notes its own polyimide labels stay readable through curing, drying or reflow, and rates them up to 260 °C for circuit-board labels.

Consider: Polyimide labels, Resin ribbons

Product labels that must be UL-recognised

The label and the ribbon are chosen as a pair; we name both in the quotation.

Consider: UL-recognised labels, Ribbons

Asset tags for tools, equipment and fixtures

Polyester asset labels for a long life, or void and tamper-proof labels that show when a tag has been removed. Zebra rates its own polyester labels at up to 2-3 years outdoors.

Consider: Asset labels, Label materials

Curved, rough or removable labelling

Labels with a speciality adhesive for curved or rough surfaces, or for labels that must peel off cleanly.

Logo or colour pre-printed labels

Your logo is pre-printed on the roll, and your barcode printer adds the variable details.

Jewellery and textile tags

Tags for tagging stock in jewellery and textile stores, printed on your barcode printer.

Label materials

Chromo, polyester, void or tamper-proof: the label that survives your job

Tell us where the label goes and how long it must last, and we will quote the material that lasts there. We confirm the material, size and core in the quotation.

Chromo paper labels

Direct thermal paper labels

Printed without a ribbon, for courier and shipping labels needed for months rather than years. Direct thermal labels in detail.

Polyester labels

For asset labels, serial plates and automotive labels, where the label must outlast heat, moisture and chemicals; Zebra also lists UL/cUL product labels among its polyester uses. Zebra's outdoor and heat figures are under "Paper or synthetic?" below. Polyester and polypropylene labels in detail.

Other synthetic labels

Polypropylene has some give for curved surfaces such as chemical drums; polyimide is the film for circuit-board labels.

Void labels

Peel one off and it leaves a pattern behind, so anyone can see it was removed.

Tamper-proof (destructible) labels

It tears apart when anyone tries to peel it off, so it cannot be reused. Zebra's 8100T Z-Destruct sheet (2016) lists asset labels, serial-number and warranty labels and high-value electronic goods among its uses.

Polyimide labels

For circuit-board labels that go through curing, drying or reflow heat. Zebra rates its own polyimide labels up to 260 °C. Print them with a resin ribbon. Polyimide labels in detail.

UL-recognised labels

For product labels that must be UL-recognised. Our UL-recognised labels come from a third-party label maker, not Zebra; we quote the label with a ribbon matched to it and name both in the quotation. UL-recognised labels in detail.

Asset labels

Polyester labels for tools, equipment and fixtures that must stay readable for years. Choose a void or tamper-proof asset label when you need to see whether a tag has been removed. Asset labels in detail.

What to tell us for a label quote

Send us these six details and we will quote the right roll for your printer. A photo of the label you use now, sent on WhatsApp, also helps.

Label size

Width and height in mm, and how many labels sit across the roll.

Gap or black mark

Whether your printer finds each label by the gap between labels or by a black mark on the back. A sample label answers this.

Roll and core

The core size and the largest roll your printer takes. The table above gives the largest roll for each printer in it, and the core size where the maker states one.

Where the label goes

The surface and what the label faces: heat, cold, water, oil, chemicals or sunlight, and how long it must stay readable.

Printer and ribbon

Your printer model, and whether it prints with a ribbon (thermal transfer) or without one (direct thermal).

Quantity and printing

Labels per roll, the number of rolls, and whether you need your logo pre-printed on the roll.

We confirm the material, size and delivery time in the quotation.

How to choose

Five questions that decide the label

Direct thermal or thermal transfer?

Direct thermal labels need no ribbon but are sensitive to heat and light, including sunlight; Zebra describes them as mainly for indoor, short to medium-term use. Thermal transfer labels are printed with a ribbon and suit indoor or outdoor use and a longer life. As a rule of thumb, Zebra suggests direct thermal paper for a label that must stay readable for about six months without chemicals, moisture or rubbing. Our direct thermal vs thermal transfer guide compares the two in detail and lists which printers take a ribbon.

Paper or synthetic?

Paper is the economical choice for general labels. Synthetics last longer and resist abrasion, moisture and chemicals. As a guide, Zebra rates its own polypropylene labels at 1-2 years outdoors and up to 121 °C, its polyester labels at up to 2-3 years outdoors and about 150 °C, and polyimide up to 260 °C for circuit-board labels.

Will the roll fit my printer?

Check three things in the table above: the label width against the printer's width range, the roll's outer diameter against the largest roll the printer takes, and the core size. Desktop printers take smaller rolls (127 mm outer diameter on the Zebra ZD models); the industrial printers in the table take rolls up to 203 mm (8 inch) outer diameter, on a 76 mm (3 inch) core on the Zebra ZT models.

What about linerless labels?

Linerless labels have no backing paper, so a roll holds more labels (Zebra: up to 50% more) and there is no liner waste. They need a printer built for them, such as the linerless versions of the Zebra ZD611 and ZD621.

How fast can I print?

Zebra notes synthetic labels do not give good text and barcodes above about 6 inches per second; for very fast printing it recommends paper labels with a high-speed wax ribbon.
