Why the ZT231
The ZT231 is the 4-inch model in Zebra's ZT200 Series and the successor to the ZT230. It prints direct thermal or thermal transfer, runs Link-OS, and takes a cutter, peeler, wireless card or UHF RFID kit after purchase.
Up to 305 mm/s (12 ips) at 203 dpi and 203 mm/s (8 ips) with the optional 300 dpi printhead, across a 104 mm print width. Speeds can be set from 2 ips upwards in 1 ips steps.
A 4.3-inch colour resistive touch screen, usable with gloves, shows status, wizards and how-to videos. Three-colour LEDs show printer state from a distance.
USB 2.0, RS-232 serial, 10/100 Ethernet and USB Host are built in, with Bluetooth Low Energy and a Print Touch (NFC) tag. One option slot takes 802.11ac Wi-Fi, a second Ethernet port or an applicator interface.
A field-installable UHF kit adds Zebra's RE40 reader/encoder for EPC Gen 2 V2.1, ISO/IEC 18000-63 and RAIN RFID tags, with a minimum tag pitch of 16 mm and Adaptive Encoding to simplify inlay placement.
Media rolls up to 203 mm outside diameter on a 76 mm core, or 152 mm on a 25 mm core, and 450 m ribbons, so changes are less frequent than on a desktop printer.
It runs ZPL and ZPL II, with EPL and EPL2 on 203 dpi models, so formats from ZT230 and other Zebra printers carry over. Zebra's Printer Emulations (some need a licence) can take formats written for other brands.

Before ordering a ZT231 for RFID, confirm the India setting and buy tags tuned for India's 865-868 MHz UHF RFID band. The ZT231's field-installable kit encodes EPC Gen 2 V2.1 and RAIN RFID tags at a minimum pitch of 16 mm, and Zebra RFID printers carry a region code and an RFID country code chosen at setup.
The ZT231 fits an EAN-13 for the product and a GS1-128 carton code on one 4-inch label, with 104 mm of print width. GS1 India notes that EAN-13 (GTIN-13) is the most used barcode number in India, with numbers it issues starting 890, and that GS1-128 is mainly used for shipping. The ZT231 prints EAN-13, Code 128 with UCC Case Codes (the basis of GS1-128), GS1 DataBar (RSS-14), Data Matrix and QR Code.
The ZT231 prints a 4 × 6 inch shipping label, 152.4 mm long, in about 0.50 seconds at 305 mm/s (12 ips, 203 dpi). With the 300 dpi head at 203 mm/s (8 ips) it takes about 0.75 seconds.
On an uncooled shop floor, give the ZT231 an air-conditioned spot from March to June. It is rated to run at 5 °C to 40 °C in thermal transfer and 0 °C to 40 °C in direct thermal, at 20-85% humidity, non-condensing.

Yes. Zebra stopped selling the ZT230 on 27 June 2022 and its support in Asia-Pacific ended on 31 January 2026; Zebra names the ZT231 as the successor.
