Quick answer

Three levels, two widths

Light industrial: ZT231

4-inch, up to 12 ips at 203 dpi and 8 ips at 300 dpi. One option slot (Wi-Fi, a second Ethernet port or an applicator interface) and a field-installable UHF RFID kit. At 9.1 kg it is the lightest of the five. Media handling options are peel, peel with liner take-up and cutter; there is no rewinder option. Zebra names it as the replacement for the ZT230.

Mid-range: ZT411 (4-inch) and ZT421 (6-inch)

The ZT411 prints up to 14 ips at 203 dpi and is the only mid-range model with a 600 dpi option; the ZT421 prints 168 mm wide at up to 12 ips. Both have two option slots (including Wi-Fi 6 with Bluetooth 5.3), a factory-fitted rewinder option and a UHF RFID encoder that can be added in the field. The on-metal RFID kit is offered for the ZT411. Zebra names them as the replacements for the ZT410 and ZT420.

Premium: ZT610 (4-inch) and ZT620 (6-inch)

Gigabit Ethernet, 1 GB RAM and 2 GB flash (the mid-range pair has 10/100 Ethernet, 256 MB and 512 MB), a cableless quick-change platen, media up to 0.305 mm thick and a 90-265 VAC power supply. The ZT610 offers 600 dpi and a Micro Label Printer option for very small labels. They are also the heaviest: 22.7 kg and 26 kg.

Which model for which job

Start from the label you need to print

Each job below names which of the ZT231, ZT411, ZT421, ZT610 and ZT620 suits it.

Dispatch and carton labels on one or two shifts

4 × 6 inch labels at 203 dpi. The ZT231 prints at up to 12 ips; the ZT411 at up to 14 ips, with two option slots and a rewinder option.

Consider: Zebra ZT231, Zebra ZT411

Production lines that print all day and night

The ZT610 and ZT620 add 1 GB RAM, Gigabit Ethernet and a cableless quick-change platen to the metal frame and media cover.

Consider: Zebra ZT610, Zebra ZT620

Tiny component and PCB labels

Only the ZT610 and ZT411 offer 600 dpi. At 600 dpi the ZT610 handles labels as short as 3 mm (rewind or tear-off; Zebra's US tech specs), and its Micro Label Printer option takes media from 12 mm wide; the ZT411's shortest label is 12.7 mm.

Consider: Zebra ZT610, Zebra ZT411

Labels wider than 4 inches

Drum, pallet and large carton labels need the 6-inch models: 168 mm print width on media up to 178 mm (ZT421) or 180 mm (ZT620) wide.

Consider: Zebra ZT421, Zebra ZT620

RFID tags, including tags for metal assets

All five offer UHF RFID. For tools, dies and machines, the ZT411's on-metal kit prints and encodes Silverline tags up to 1.5 mm thick (203 and 300 dpi models).

Is the bigger model worth it?

What you gain by stepping up

ZT231 or ZT411?

The ZT411 adds speed (14 ips against 12 ips at 203 dpi, 10 ips against 8 ips at 300 dpi), a 600 dpi option, a second option slot, a factory rewinder option and the on-metal RFID kit. The ZT231 is smaller and much lighter (9.1 kg against 16.33 kg) and takes rolls up to 152 mm outside diameter on 25 mm (1-inch) cores without an add-on. If up to 12 ips at 203 dpi (8 ips at 300 dpi) covers your labels, the ZT231 is enough.

ZT411 or ZT610?

The ZT610 adds Gigabit Ethernet, four times the RAM (1 GB against 256 MB), faster high-resolution printing (12 ips against 10 ips at 300 dpi, 6 ips against 4 ips at 600 dpi), labels as short as 3 mm at 600 dpi (rewind or tear-off; Zebra's US tech specs), the Micro Label Printer option and media up to 0.305 mm thick (0.25 mm on the ZT411). The ZT411 keeps the on-metal RFID kit and is lighter (16.33 kg against 22.7 kg). Both print up to 14 ips at 203 dpi.

4-inch or 6-inch?

Choose a 6-inch model only if your labels are wider than the 104 mm a 4-inch printer covers. The 6-inch models print up to 12 ips and stop at 300 dpi, against 14 ips and a 600 dpi option on the ZT411 and ZT610. Between the two 6-inch models, the ZT421 is rated faster at 300 dpi (10 ips against 8 ips on the ZT620); the ZT620 adds the premium features listed above.

For buyers in India

Power, heat and RFID rules

Mains voltage

The ZT231, ZT411 and ZT421 are rated 100-240 VAC; the ZT610 and ZT620 are rated 90-265 VAC at 250 W. A stabiliser helps on an unsteady feed, and a UPS for a ZT610 or ZT620 should be sized above 250 W.

Heat

All five are rated for 5 °C to 40 °C in thermal transfer and 0 °C to 40 °C in direct thermal, at 20% to 85% humidity, non-condensing. Place an industrial printer in a cooled area rather than on an open shop floor.

RFID band

India's licence-free UHF RFID band is 865-868 MHz. Zebra RFID printers carry an RFID country code set for the region they were built for, so confirm the India setting before ordering, and buy tags made for that band.

Questions buyers ask

Zebra industrial printer FAQ

What is the price of the Zebra ZT231, ZT411, ZT421, ZT610 and ZT620 in India?

It depends on the model, resolution, options (rewinder, cutter, RFID, Wi-Fi) and quantity. Ask our team for today's competitive price: share your requirement and budget, and we will help you choose the right configuration and send a written quotation with current pricing and delivery time.

Which Zebra industrial printers print at 600 dpi?

The ZT411 and the ZT610. The ZT231, ZT421 and ZT620 offer 203 and 300 dpi.

Can a 6-inch printer also print 4-inch labels?

Yes. The ZT421 and ZT620 take media from 51 mm wide, so 4-inch labels fit. If all your labels are 4 inches or narrower, the ZT411 and ZT610 print faster at 203 dpi (14 ips against 12 ips), and the ZT231 and ZT411 are lighter than either 6-inch model (9.1 kg and 16.33 kg against 18.14 kg and 26 kg).

Which models can encode RFID tags?

All five offer UHF RFID for EPC Gen 2 V2.1, ISO/IEC 18000-63 and RAIN RFID tags: a field-installable kit on the ZT231, and an encoder that can be added in the field on the ZT411, ZT421, ZT610 and ZT620. The on-metal kit for Silverline tags is offered for the 203 and 300 dpi ZT411. The ZT610 Micro Label Printer option does not support RFID.

Do they use the same labels and ribbons?

The rolls and ribbons are the same size class: all five take label rolls up to 203 mm outside diameter on a 76 mm core and 450 m ribbons on a 25 mm core. Ribbon widths differ: up to 110 mm on the 4-inch models and up to 174 mm (ZT421) or 170 mm (ZT620) on the 6-inch models. Tell us the printer and label, and we will quote labels and ribbons to match.

We have an older Zebra industrial printer. What replaces it?

Zebra names the ZT231 for the ZT230, the ZT411 for the ZT410, the ZT421 for the ZT420 and the ZT620 for the 220Xi4 (the 220Xi4 is 8-inch class and the ZT620 prints 168 mm, so check your widest label). The replacement table above gives Zebra's dates, and the discontinued models guide covers every other model.
