Why the DS8178
The DS8178 is the cordless model of Zebra's DS8100 Series; the corded version is the DS8108. Zebra lists the newer DS8288 as replacing the DS8178, but both DS8100 models are still available in India and Zebra has not published a last-sale date for them.
Choose a 2,500 mAh PowerPrecision+ battery (65,000 scans per charge at one scan a second) or a PowerCap capacitor that charges fully in 30 minutes over USB. Zebra says the two can be swapped at any time in your own facility; the PowerCap needs scanner firmware CAACXS00-004-R00 or later, which we check before we quote it for an existing scanner.
With Virtual Tether, the scanner and cradle both alert when the scanner is taken out of range or left out of the cradle too long, and a paging button on the cradle helps find a lost DS8178.
Bluetooth 4.0 with BLE reaches up to 100 m (Class 1). Wi-Fi Friendly Mode keeps the scanner off the channels your wireless network uses.
A dedicated Power Charge Gauge shows whether the battery or PowerCap holds enough charge, and the cradle's Connect+ contacts are designed for corrosion-free charging.
The 1,280 × 960 sensor and Zebra's PRZM imaging decode creased, faded or dirty labels and dense codes first time, as well as codes on dim phone screens.
Zebra designs it for repeated 1.8 m drops to concrete and 2,000 tumbles at 0.5 m, seals it to IP52 and rates it for 0 °C to 50 °C, so a dropped scanner keeps working.

Keep the cradle away from a sunny shutter or an un-air-conditioned window, because Zebra rates charging only between 0 °C and 40 °C; the scanner itself works from 0 °C to 50 °C.
At goods inward, the DS8178 reads a GST e-invoice QR and passes the text to your software; checking the signature is a software step. Zebra gives a 20 mil QR range of 0.3 cm to 44.7 cm.
Choose the PowerCap where the scanner always returns to its cradle between uses: Zebra rates it for 2,000 scans per charge and a full charge in 30 minutes over USB. For long or double shifts, choose the battery.

Zebra lists the DS8288 as replacing the DS8178, but the DS8178 is still available in India and Zebra has not published a last-sale date. Choose the DS8178 to match an existing DS8100 fleet and its cradles, or if your POS needs keyboard wedge or IBM 46XX over RS485 (through the 4690 cradle), which Zebra lists for the DS8100 but not for the DS82 Series. Choose the DS8288 for its 2 MP sensor, Bluetooth 5.2 and RFID versions.
The 2,500 mAh PowerPrecision+ battery gives 65,000 scans per charge, which suits long or double shifts. The PowerCap has no battery to wear out; it gives 2,000 scans per charge and charges fully in 30 minutes over USB, so it suits scanners that go back to the cradle between uses. Zebra says you can swap between them at any time; on an existing scanner the PowerCap needs firmware CAACXS00-004-R00 or later.
Up to 100 m with Class 1 Bluetooth, or 10 m with Class 2, in Zebra's figures; walls and racks shorten this in practice. Virtual Tether alerts staff when the scanner goes out of range or stays out of the cradle too long.
