Why the DS8208 / DS8288

Small, dense and low-contrast codes, corded or cordless

Zebra lists this range as the DS82 Series and names it the successor to the DS8100 Series: its DS8208 page says it replaces the DS8108, and its DS8288 page says it replaces the DS8178. The DS8108 and DS8178 are still sold, and Zebra has not published a last-sale date for them.

Reads small, dense and damaged codes

A 1600 × 1200 sensor with Zebra's PRZM imaging reads Code 39 and Code 128 down to 3 mil. A 13 mil UPC reads from 0.5 cm to 69.9 cm, and it also decodes QR, Data Matrix, GS1 Digital Link, Digimarc and OCR-A/B.

Choose a battery or no battery

The cordless DS8288 takes a 3,500 mAh PowerPrecision+ battery rated for 100,000 scans per charge at 60 scans a minute. Or choose the PowerCap supercapacitor: 6,000 scans per charge and a full charge in 14 minutes over USB-C.

A second button for your workflow

A programmable multi-function button with haptic feedback sits beside the trigger. Use it to switch between billing and returns, or to start an RFID read on the R models.

Barcode and RFID in one scanner

The DS8208-R and DS8288-R add a UHF RFID reader (EPC Gen2 V2.2, ISO 18000-63) with a nominal read rate of about 10 tags per second and a range of about 109 cm.

Alerts before a scanner goes missing

Bluetooth 5.2 with BLE reaches up to 100 m (Class 1). With Virtual Tether, the scanner and cradle both alert if it is carried out of range or left out of the cradle, and a paging button on the cradle helps find it.

Made for daily knocks

Sealed to IP52, designed for 54 drops at 1.8 m to concrete and 2,000 tumbles at 0.5 m. It works from 0 °C to 50 °C. A healthcare version (DS82-HC) has a disinfectant-ready housing.

Used in

  • Retail billing counters
  • Pharmacies
  • Hospitals (HC version)
  • Hospitality & ticketing
  • Logistics & courier counters
  • Warehouse goods inward

For buyers in India

Using the DS8208 / DS8288 in India

These are the points buyers in India ask us about the DS8208 / DS8288. Mention the ones that apply to you when you request a quote.

Order the India-only DS8208 and DS8288 codes

Order with Zebra's India-only codes from its DS8208/DS8288 reference guide (MN-005267-04EN): DS8208-SR40004VZY corded, DS8288-SR0F004VZY cordless, and healthcare versions DS8208-HC4000BVZY and DS8288-HCMF00BVMY. Zebra's DS82 accessory guide adds an India-only spare battery, BTRY-DS82EAB0E-00Y. It also lists a 5 V wall charger with an India plug, PWR-WUA5V12W0IN, rated for 100-240 V AC, which covers India's 230 V mains.

India RFID versions: confirm the frequency first

Confirm the India RFID version's frequency before ordering, because Zebra does not state its MHz range. Zebra's reference guide lists India-frequency RFID versions, DS8208-SR50004VZIN and DS8288-SR5F004VZIN, with the region setting fixed so they need no set-up; India's UHF RFID band is 865-868 MHz.

Reads medicine-pack QR codes with your billing scanner

A pharmacy counter or pharma warehouse can read the barcodes and QR codes on medicine packs with the DS8200 it bills with. It reads QR and Data Matrix down to 5 mil and Code 128 down to 3 mil.

Reads e-invoice QR codes at goods inward

At goods inward, the DS8200 reads a GST e-invoice QR and passes the text to your software; checking the signature is a software step. It reads a 20 mil QR from 0 to 48.3 cm and QR down to 5 mil.

Keep the DS8288 cradle out of sun and heat

In summer, keep the DS8288 cradle away from the shutter and direct sun at a counter without air conditioning. The scanner works from 0 °C to 50 °C, but Zebra's guide says its battery does not charge below 0 °C or above 40 °C, and charges ideally at 5-35 °C.

Questions buyers ask

DS8208 / DS8288 FAQ

What is the price of the Zebra DS8208 / DS8288 in India?

The DS8208 / DS8288 price depends on the cable or accessories you need and the quantity. Ask our team for today's competitive price: share your requirement and budget, and we will help you choose the right configuration and send a written quotation with current pricing and delivery time.

Should we buy the DS8108 / DS8178 or the DS8208 / DS8288?

Zebra names the DS8208 as the replacement for the DS8108 and the DS8288 for the DS8178, but the older models are still sold and no last-sale date has been published. The new models add a 2 MP sensor, a green aimer, a larger 3,500 mAh battery, Bluetooth 5.2, a multi-function button and an RFID option. Check your host connection first: Zebra lists USB and RS232 for the DS8200, with IBM POS modes over USB, while the DS8100 also listed keyboard wedge and IBM 46XX over RS485.

Should we choose the corded DS8208 or the cordless DS8288?

The corded DS8208 suits fixed billing counters and packing stations, and needs no charging. The cordless DS8288 suits counters where staff scan bulky items in the trolley, or move around the store or desk. Its Bluetooth 5.2 link reaches up to 100 m, and Virtual Tether alerts staff if the scanner is taken out of range.

Battery or PowerCap: which should we pick for the DS8288?

The 3,500 mAh PowerPrecision+ battery gives up to 100,000 scans per charge, which suits long or double shifts. The PowerCap supercapacitor has no battery to wear out; it gives about 6,000 scans per charge and charges fully in about 14 minutes over USB-C, so it suits scanners that go back to the cradle between uses.

Will the DS8200 work with our billing or ERP software?

Zebra lists USB and RS232 host interfaces and support for over 90 international keyboard layouts. Allmark integrates scanners with billing, inventory and ERP software, and provides on-site installation and training. Tell us the software and the PC or POS terminal you use when you ask for a quote.

What is the RFID version used for, and is there an India version?

The DS8208-R and DS8288-R read UHF RFID tags as well as barcodes, at about 10 tags per second and up to about 109 cm. Zebra lists retail inventory and loss prevention among its uses. Zebra's spec sheet lists US, EU and Japan bands; its reference guide also lists India-frequency versions, shown in the India section of this page. Mention RFID when you ask for a quote.

Can Allmark install the DS8208 / DS8288 and connect it to our software?

Yes. We install the DS8208 / DS8288 at your site, set it to send data the way your ERP, warehouse or billing software expects (our own warehouse management system included) and train your team. Tell us the software when you ask for a quote, and we include the setup in the quotation.
