Why the DS9908
The DS9908 is the corded hybrid model in Zebra's DS9900 Series: it scans hands-free on its built-in stand and switches to handheld use when a cashier picks it up. Zebra also makes an RFID version (DS9908R), a Checkpoint EAS version and a high-density version (DS9908-HD).
A capacitive touch sensor and an accelerometer switch the DS9908 to handheld mode as soon as it is lifted, with no mechanical switch to wear out. On the stand the range is kept short so nearby items are not scanned by mistake; in the hand a 13 mil UPC reads up to 62.7 cm away.
A 1280 × 800 sensor and an 800 MHz processor read 1D, 2D and Digimarc codes, down to 3 mil Code 39 and 6 mil QR Code, at a 16% minimum print contrast. Hands-free swipe speed is up to 610 cm per second for a 13 mil UPC in optimised mode.
The scanner and its stand are one unit, 20.3 cm high, 9.4 cm wide and 13.2 cm deep, and weigh 330 g. An optional multi-mount bracket fixes it to a wall or table.
Sealed to IP52 with raised electronics, the DS9908 is designed for multiple 1.5 m drops to concrete and 2,000 tumbles at 0.5 m; the DS9908R RFID model is rated IP42 and 1.2 m drops. It works from 0 °C to 50 °C and in 5-95% humidity, non-condensing.
One version deactivates Checkpoint EAS tags while it scans the price. The DS9908R adds a UHF RFID reader for EPC Gen2 V2 tags with a nominal read range of about 45.7 cm, powered from 5 V DC with no separate supply, and it can write tags for returns.
One trigger press captures an A4 page at 116 PPI and exports it as BMP, JPEG or TIFF. OCR-A, OCR-B and MICR are supported, and 123Scan, Scanner Management Service and Zebra's SDKs handle set-up.

The DS9908 reads the codes customers hold up on their phones, such as digital coupons and loyalty codes; it has no part in UPI payment. It reads QR Code down to 6 mil, and its reference guide has a Mobile Phone/Display Mode for handheld, hands-free or both.
The DS9908 reads UPC/EAN and GS1 DataBar, so it reads products barcoded through GS1 India. Their EAN-13 numbers start with 890.
Staff can show a small pack to the DS9908 stand: in hands-free mode a 20 mil QR reads from 0 to 24.1 cm. It reads whichever code the pack carries, 1D codes down to 3 mil and QR Code and Data Matrix down to 6 mil.
Power the DS9908 from the POS over USB: 321 mA at 5 V is about 1.6 W, within the 500 mA of a USB 2.0 port. Its optional 5 V power supplies are listed with US, Korean, EU/UK, Chinese and HK/AU plugs, none for India. Zebra's DS9908 reference guide lists two 'India Only' configurations: DS9908-SR00004ZZY (standard range, Midnight Black) and DS9908-HD4000WZZY (high density, Alpine White).

Scan it all with virtually no exceptions
The DS9900 Series combines an 800 MHz microprocessor, a high-resolution megapixel sensor and Zebra’s exclusive PRZM Intelligent Imaging technology for what Zebra calls "unparalleled performance" on 1D, 2D and Digimarc® barcodes. Problematic barcodes won’t slow down your checkout lanes. The DS9900 Series can instantly capture dense, poorly printed, damaged, crinkled, faded, distorted, low-contrast, and glossy printed barcodes, as well as electronic barcodes on dimly lit mobile phone displays.
Hybrid ergonomics
The ergonomic handle is comfortably weighted and balanced, remarkably easy to pick up and aim in handheld mode. In presentation mode, the integrated adjustable stand offers a sturdy, compact solution that fits into space-constrained areas and frees up more space for impulse buys.
Two scanners in one
Handheld and presentation modes have different requirements for scanning. That’s why the DS9900 Series is purpose built for both modes. In presentation mode, the scan range is limited to prevent unintentional scanning of nearby items. In handheld mode, the scan range is extended up to 24 in./62 cm to easily reach items in the cart.
Day-in, day-out dependability
The DS9900 Series delivers the day-in, day-out dependable operation you need in your checkout lanes. Zebra says its proven single circuit board design eliminates a common point of failure, "substantially increasing durability". Image quality is protected by a patented double-sealed optical scanning system, ensuring that the ‘eye’ of the DS9900 Series always captures the sharpest possible barcode for fast and reliable decoding. And the recessed scan window protects against smudges, dirt and scratches.
Designed to survive spills and drops
With IP52 sealing and elevated electronics, accidental spills and dust won’t impact operation. Inadvertent drops aren’t a problem either — you can depend on reliable operation, even after multiple 5 ft./1.5 m drops to concrete and 2,000 consecutive 1.5 ft./0.5 m tumbles (DS9908R RFID model: IP42 sealing and drops from 1.2 m).
Deactivate EAS tags while scanning
Optional EAS support allows associates to deactivate Checkpoint EAS tags while scanning the price, boosting productivity at the checkout and preventing erroneous alarms.
Doubles as a document scanner
With a single press of the scan trigger, Zebra’s Intelligent Document Capture can capture a high-resolution image of checks and full page documents. Smart software automatically compensates for variations in lighting and squares up the image for optimum clarity.

Yes. Zebra's support pages show the DS9808 stopped selling in August 2019 with support ending on 1 October 2024, and the DS4308 series stopped selling in February 2020 with support ending on 31 May 2025. Zebra lists the DS9908 among the successors for both. The DS9908 reference guide says DS9808 cables can be reused, though shielded cables give better protection against static.
Yes. Zebra designed it to read electronic barcodes on dimly lit phone displays as well as printed labels, such as mobile coupons, loyalty codes and e-tickets. It reads QR Code and Data Matrix down to 6 mil; a 20 mil QR reads from 0 to 24.1 cm on the stand. A Mobile Phone/Display Mode can be enabled for handheld use, hands-free use or both. UPI payments do not need it: the customer's UPI app scans the shop's QR code.
