Why the DS9308
The DS9308 is Zebra's DS9300 Series presentation scanner and the successor to the DS9208. It stands on the counter with its window facing the cashier or customer, and reads barcodes passed in front of it without a trigger.
It measures 14.5 cm high, 8.6 cm wide and 8.3 cm deep and weighs 318 g. A 45° cable connector keeps the footprint small even when the scanner is tilted forward.
A 52° × 33° field of view and swipe speeds of up to 305 cm/s for a 13 mil UPC in optimised mode mean items do not have to be lined up with the window.
A 1280 × 800 sensor with PRZM decoding reads QR and Data Matrix down to 5 mil, codes on phone screens, DotCode through cellophane, and OCR-A/B and MICR text. Digimarc reading is offered on specific models.
Intelligent Document Capture images A6 or smaller documents, such as prescriptions, at 109 PPI and exports Bitmap, JPEG or TIFF files.
The ratcheting base sets four positions from 15° back to 45° forward. A multi-mount bracket fixes it to a table or wall, and a locking-mount bracket stops it being removed at self-service points.
Zebra states the DS9300 Series works with DS9208 cables and power supplies, so the change can keep the existing cabling. It is sealed to IP52 and designed for 1.5 m drops and 1,000 tumbles at 0.5 m.

Plan to power the India-only DS9308 from the PC: its power-supply table has plugs for the US, Korea, EU/UK, China and HK/Australia but none for India. It draws 335 mA in presentation mode and 350 mA in trigger mode, about 70% of a USB 2.0 port's 500 mA. Zebra's DS9308 reference guide (MN-003532-08EN) lists DS9308-SR00004ZZY, a standard-range Midnight Black model for India only. This model is not one of Zebra's Checkpoint EAS configurations; EAS deactivation needs an EAS (ZC) configuration.
The DS9308 reads the e-tickets, coupons and loyalty codes customers hold to its window on their phones. It has a Mobile Phone/Display Mode for screens and reads QR down to 5 mil, with a 20 mil QR from 0 to 19.1 cm. It has no part in UPI payment: at an Indian counter the customer's UPI app scans the shop's QR.
Cashiers can pass items across the DS9308 window without stopping. In Zebra's optimised mode it reads at swipe speeds up to 305 cm/s, and it reads a 13 mil UPC/EAN code from 0 to 22.4 cm in front of its window. Products barcoded through GS1 India carry EAN-13 numbers starting with 890.

With a near-zero footprint, there’s always room for the DS9300 Series, no matter how space-constrained your counters may be. And the 45° angle cable connector reduces the already tiny footprint, even when the scanner is tilted forward.
Built to Handle Drops, Tumbles and Spills
Zebra designs the DS9308 to withstand repeated 1.5 m drops to concrete and 1,000 tumbles in a 0.5 m tumbler. IP52 sealing guards against dust and dripping water, and a concealed beeper hole with raised circuitry makes the base spill-proof.
Eliminate paper with document capture
With Intelligent Document Capture, the DS9300 Series can turn prescriptions, passports, checks and other A6 or smaller documents into clear and easy-to-read electronic images — the smart software automatically corrects lighting issues and more to ensure optimum document clarity. There’s no need to locate and scan documents on a separate scanner, enabling faster checkout and a better customer experience at the POS.
Optional anti-theft tag deactivation
Checkpoint EAS configurations of the DS9300 Series deactivate Checkpoint Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) tags in the same pass as the scan — one less step at the POS.
Capture multiple barcodes with one press of the scan trigger
With Multi-Code Data Formatting (MDF), the DS9300 Series can capture multiple barcodes with a single scan and transmit only the barcodes you need, in the order your application expects.
Single out one barcode from many
With Zebra’s Preferred Symbol, the DS9300 Series can capture and output only the preferred barcode, so associates no longer have to waste time physically covering nearby barcodes before scanning.
Ensure feedback is always visible and audible
You can adjust the volume, frequency and duration of the beeper to ensure your associates can hear the tone that signals a successful scan. And the bright green “good decode” LED is visible no matter where your associates are standing — in front of or behind the scanner.

Yes. Zebra's support page shows the DS9208 reached its last sale date on 20 May 2020 and support ended on 30 June 2025, and Zebra names the DS9300 Series as its successor. Zebra states the DS9300 Series works with DS9208 cables and power supplies, so the upgrade can keep the existing cabling.
The DS9308 is a compact presentation scanner (318 g, 14.5 cm tall) with a 52° × 33° field of view. The DS9908 is a larger hybrid (330 g, 20.3 cm tall) that also works as a handheld and swipes up to 610 cm/s. Choose the DS9308 for a small counter; choose the DS9908 when cashiers also need to scan heavy items without lifting them.
Yes. It reads 1D and 2D codes on phone screens, and Zebra's reference guide includes a Mobile Phone/Display Mode setting to improve reading from screens. The curved exit window reduces reflections from glossy paper and screens. Use it for e-tickets, coupons, loyalty codes and QR codes shown on a phone.
It is built to stand on the counter, but it can be picked up for an occasional handheld scan, such as a price check, and it has a trigger mode. For regular handheld scanning, the DS9908 hybrid or a DS4608 is a better fit. At self-service points, the locking-mount bracket keeps it fixed in place.
Zebra lists USB, RS232, keyboard wedge and IBM 46XX interfaces and over 90 keyboard layouts, so billing software that accepts typed input reads it like a keyboard. ScanSpeed Analytics in 123Scan shows which barcodes are slowing the counter down.
