The DS2208 is the corded model of Zebra's DS2200 Series; the DS2278 is its cordless Bluetooth twin. It is an area imager, so it reads 1D barcodes in any orientation and 2D codes such as QR, Data Matrix and PDF417, on paper or on a phone screen.
Reads 1D and 2D codes
An omnidirectional 640 × 480 imager with Zebra's PRZM decoding reads UPC/EAN, Code 128, GS1 DataBar, QR, Data Matrix, PDF417 and more. Zebra's DS2200 Series spec sheet gives its smallest readable codes as 4 mil Code 39 and Code 128, 6 mil Data Matrix and 6.7 mil QR; for 3 mil codes, see the DS4608.
Plug in and scan
Zebra's auto-host-detect cables recognise a USB, RS232, keyboard wedge or IBM 46XX host when plugged in. If a setting needs changing, Zebra's phone-based Simple Setup works by scanning the QR code on the scanner, and 123Scan handles the rest from a PC.
Handheld or hands-free
Put it in the optional Gooseneck Intellistand and it switches to hands-free mode by itself; lift it out and it works as a handheld again, with no settings to change.
Reads at awkward angles
Zebra rates it for ±65° skew and pitch and any roll angle, and for ambient light up to 107,600 lux, so codes need not face the window squarely.
Clear scan feedback
Zebra's Direct Decode Indicator flashes the illumination on the barcode on a good read, alongside good-decode LEDs, rear-view LEDs and a beeper with adjustable tone and volume.

Using the DS2208 in India
These are the points buyers in India ask us about the DS2208. Mention the ones that apply to you when you request a quote.
Reads UPI QR codes on bills and phone screens
The DS2208 reads a UPI QR on a bill or a phone as an ordinary QR Code and passes the text to your software; it does not make or confirm a payment. It decodes QR Code down to 6.7 mil, and Zebra's guide says phone screens need no special mode.
Reads the GST e-invoice QR on supplier bills
The DS2208 reads the QR code on GST e-invoices from suppliers and passes the text to your software; checking the signature is a software step. It reads a 20 mil QR from 0 to 27.9 cm, so hold it close for a small, dense print.
Reads 890 EAN-13 codes across the billing counter
The DS2208 reads the EAN-13 codes on packs held up at a billing counter. Products barcoded through GS1 India carry EAN-13 numbers starting with 890, and the scanner decodes them under UPC/EAN. Zebra rates a standard 13 mil UPC/EAN code from 1.27 cm to 36.8 cm.
India model DS2208-SR00007ZZK runs on USB power
A billing PC normally powers the DS2208 over USB without an adapter. The scanner runs on 4.5-5.5 V DC from the host and draws about 250 mA while scanning, half of the 500 mA a USB 2.0 port supplies. Zebra's DS2208 reference guide (MN-002874-14EN) lists DS2208-SR00007ZZK, a standard-range Twilight Black model for India and South Korea only.

More about the Zebra DS2208
Instant Decoding with PRZM Intelligent Imaging
Zebra’s exclusive PRZM Intelligent Imaging technology delivers first-time capture of 1D and 2D barcodes printed on labels—including Code 39 and Code 128 codes as small as 4 mil.
Built for Daily Use at the Counter
Zebra designs the DS2208 to survive repeated 1.5 m drops to concrete and 250 tumbles in a 0.5 m tumbler. Its IP52 sealing protects against dust and dripping water, and it is rated to work from 0 °C to 50 °C.
Switch Between Handheld and Hands-Free Scanning
In the optional stand, the DS2208 scans hands-free at swipe speeds up to 76.2 cm per second, and lifts out for handheld use at any time.
Reads Printed and On-Screen Codes in Any Orientation
The DS2208’s 640 × 480 pixel imager reads 1D barcodes and 2D codes such as QR, Data Matrix and PDF417, whether printed on a label or shown on a phone screen. Scanning is omnidirectional, so the code does not have to be lined up first.
Quick to Set Up and Manage Remotely
Zebra’s auto-host-detect cables recognise the host interface when plugged in, and the DS2208 also accepts LS2208 cables. Zebra’s 123Scan tool changes settings and updates firmware, and Scanner Management Service manages scanners remotely.
If your job differs from what the DS2208 is built for, these Zebra models may fit it better:
Buyers who need to scan away from the PC, or scan heavy cartons and bulky items without lifting them, often look at the
Zebra DS2278 (cordless, Bluetooth 4.0, the same 640 × 480 imager).
Buyers who read very small or damaged codes, or a 13 mil UPC from further than about 37 cm, often look at the
Zebra DS4608 (1280 × 800 sensor, up to 71.1 cm in the SR version).
Quote the part number for your DS2208 in your enquiry and we confirm the exact part. These are Zebra's own codes; if you do not have yours, send a photo of the device's rating label.

We use LS2208 or LS4208 laser scanners. Should we move to the DS2208?
Move if you need to read QR codes, codes on phone screens or other 2D codes: the LS2208 and LS4208 are 1D laser scanners and cannot read them. Zebra ended support for the LS4208 on 31 December 2024 and lists the DS2208 among its replacements. The LS2208 is still a current Zebra model, so a working LS2208 that only scans printed 1D barcodes need not be replaced. Zebra states the DS2200 Series uses the same universal cables as the LS2208.
Can the DS2208 read UPI QR codes and codes on phone screens?
Yes. The DS2208 is a 2D imager and decodes QR Code, which is what a UPI QR code is. Zebra's reference guide says reading barcodes on mobile phones needs no special mode. The scanner sends the decoded text, such as the upi://pay link, to your software like typed keystrokes; it does not take or confirm the payment itself.
DS2208 or DS4608: which should we choose?
Both are corded Zebra 1D/2D imagers. The DS2208 has a 640 × 480 sensor and reads a 13 mil UPC/EAN code up to 36.8 cm away. The DS4608 has a 1280 × 800 sensor, reads the same code up to 71.1 cm away (SR version), handles smaller codes, DotCode and OCR, and is designed for 1.8 m drops. The DS2208 suits steady counter billing; the DS4608 suits busier or more demanding counters.
Corded DS2208 or cordless DS2278?
They share the same imager and scanning range. The corded DS2208 is powered by the PC or POS it plugs into and never needs charging. The cordless DS2278 adds Bluetooth 4.0 and a 2,400 mAh battery rated for 110,000 scans at 60 scans per minute, and pairs with a PC, tablet or phone by scanning one barcode. Choose the DS2278 when staff scan items they cannot lift to the counter.
Will the DS2208 work with our billing or ERP software?
Over USB it can work as a keyboard, so billing software that accepts typed input takes the data without a driver; Zebra lists over 90 international keyboard layouts. RS232 and IBM 46XX are available for older POS terminals, and Zebra's Scanner SDK has drivers and sample code for Windows, Android, iOS and Linux where software talks to the scanner directly.
Can Allmark install the DS2208 and connect it to our software?
Yes. We install the DS2208 at your site, set it to send data the way your ERP, warehouse or billing software expects (our own warehouse management system included) and train your team. Tell us the software when you ask for a quote, and we include the setup in the quotation.
